Why Urine is a Hot Topic

When it comes to drug testing, accuracy is key. And, part of being accurate is making sure that the urine specimen being tested belongs to the person who is providing it.
It’s no secret that there are companies offering fake (or synthetic) urine that can be used to pass drug tests. It can be purchased for as little as $15 to around $40 in head shops, truck stops and even on the Internet.
When coming out of a person’s body, normal human urine typically is 94 to 96 degrees Fahrenheit, after which it typically begins to cool down. Remember, the body’s temperature is typically around 98.6
Those who try to game the system know that the industry standard for testing allows urine temperature from 90 degrees to 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Anything outside that range likely will give a tester cause for suspicion. To keep the sample warm, some fake urine kits come with a warming device. Others being tested will simply try to warm the sample by putting it up against their skin.
There are ways to catch those trying to cheat the system. For example, you can ask that they empty their pockets before providing a sample. Women can be asked to leave their purses, and men can be asked to leave their valuables, in a secure locker.
You also can listen for the sound of someone urinating. If you only hear movement and no normal signs of peeing, there’s a chance they are simply filling the specimen bottle with fake urine. That’s not to say they also might urinate in the toilet to replicate the sound, and then still provide a fake urine sample. If you suspect that’s the case, you can always provide the person being tested with plenty of water and ask them to stick around to take the test again.
Some testing centers will even require a drug test to be monitored, with those being tested having to drop their pants and lift their shirts to make sure they are not cheating.
Many states, including New Hampshire and Indiana, have banned the sale and use of synthetic urine, while others, including Mississippi and Missouri have recently introduced legislation that would ban its sale and use.
